Chives (Allium Schoenoprasum)
| This is a perennial herb that is
propagated by separating the clumps of seed divisions each year, and grows to a height of
8 to 10 inches. It is best grown in full sun and rich soil. Chives have lavender colored
flowers. It should be planted about 1 inch deep. This herb will multiply fast and
should be separated in the spring or fall. Clumps of Chives can be potted and brought
inside for winter use. The leaves of this herb are always best used fresh, although it is
the only herb that is best dried in the oven, if need be. Chopped in salads, omelets, sour cream, soups, and cheese dishes, it gives added zest and color. |
