- Preheat oven to 350
degrees. Grease and flour one 10-inch tube pan.
- Prepare cake mix as
label directs. Spoon batter into prepared pan and
spread evenly. Bake cake 40 to 45 minutes or until
toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
Cool cake in pan on a wire rack 15 minutes. Invert cake
onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- To assemble and
decorate cake, with serrated knife, cut cake in half from
top to bottom. On large platter or tray, place cake
halves with rounded sides touching and cut sides facing out
to resemble butterfly wings.
- Divide frosting in
half and tint each as desired with food coloring (use any 2
colors you like, or tint only half the frosting, leaving
remaining frosting white). With metal spatula,
frost half of each wing, top and sides, with 1 color
frosting, then frost remaining half or each wing with
remaining frosting. With spatula, spread frosting out
toward edges of wings to create curved lines, blending
frosting colors slightly to create feathered look.
- Place gummy worm in
center of halves to resemble butterfly's body. Arrange
licorice at the top of gummy worm to resemble antennae,
inserting licorice into cake to secure. Decorate as
desired with gumdrops.
